Balmy Lilac Monarda (Bee Balm) has light purple blooms that are wild and shaggy. The leaves are lance-shaped, dark green and very fragrant. All of this combined is enticing for nectar loving critters such as bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. The Balmy series is compact with a mounding habit but don’t let the smaller size fool you, they explode with an abundance of blooms from late spring through summer. To keep them tidy and the blooms coming, trim the spent blooms. Monarda prefer moist conditions so be sure to keep them watered well and try to not let them dry out. Though they like it wet, they don’t like to be too soggy, so make sure the soil drains well but retains plenty of moisture.
