Hummingbird Nicotiana

Hummingbird Nicotiana can add beauty and fragrance to your beds or containers all summer long. It has a low rosette of large flat, velvety leaves that supports tall flowering stems covered in star-shaped blooms. As the name suggests, hummingbirds are attracted to the sweet fragrance and nectar that is stored in these blossoms.

Don’t panic if the petals stay closed during the day, they will open up in late afternoon or early evening.  In hot locations you may want to give them a break from the harsh afternoon sun by planting them in an area that gets a bit of shade during that time.  Nicotiana can tolerate heat, and prefers moist soil, not soggy.

Nicotiana is also known as flowering tobacco. The Hummingbird series is bred to be more compact and free flowering than heirloom or wildflower varieties.
