Sempervivum Hens and Chicks is a succulent with flower-like rosettes that send out numerous sprouts making it easy to propagate and share with friends. There are many different shapes, textures, colors and sizes of
Sempervivum that will add plenty of interest to containers and landscapes. Colors are usually best in the spring and fall. One “hen” can produce several “chicks” in one season filling in a space quickly. Neglect works best for most succulent types of plants since they do not like too much water or require much fertilization.
Many types of Sempervivum can be found in their natural habitat 3000 to 8000 feet above sea level in the mountainous regions of Central and Southern Europe and on the Islands in the Mediterranean. The name Sempervivum literally translates to “always living”. When the mother plant reaches maturity it will bloom and then die leaving a space for the chicks to fill in and continue the cycle.
Sempervivum is drought and heat tolerant. It does well in beds, as a border and in rock gardens. It can also be grown in containers and indoors near a sunny window.
Sempervivum is available in our Quart Perennial size category.
